Daniel Matt: Jewish Mysticism

A circle of rabbis bombarded by strange characters
A cosmology based on ten dimensions of reality
The apocalypse of a Messiah hidden in heaven
The Old Man of Mishpatim, who teaches in riddles and paradoxes resolved through a chivalrous story of a damsel in a castle
This is the Zohar, the beautiful but impenetrable work of Jewish spirituality. Written in Aramaic and filled with digressions, symbolism and morality tales, it long defied translators unable to replicate its complex, poetic rhythm.
Enter Daniel Matt, who never expected to devote eighteen years to that challenge. But while studying abroad at the Hebrew University, he fell in love with the complex volumes and couldn’t resist. Matt, professor at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, will introduce us to the Zohar, what it teaches us about Jewish life in Spain at the time it was written and how it deepens our spiritual life.
