Nathan Englander in Conversation with Jonathan Safran Foer

Includes a copy of the book.

Nathan Englander chafes at being pigeonholed as a “Jewish writer.” But the label is inevitable when your latest book is a fable about a Memphis man who is too much the atheist to recite the daily prayer for the dead — and appeases his Orthodox mother by hiring a stranger through kaddish.com to replace him. Or when you write in the tradition of absurdist tales that runs from “The Wise Men of Chelm” to Franz Kafka to Woody Allen.

The author of two prior novels and two story collections, Englander was chosen as one of 20 Writers for the 21st Century by The New Yorker, received a Guggenheim Fellowship and is Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at New York University. He will appear on our stage to talk about Kaddish.com, being a Jewish writer and his characters, who find themselves helplessly connected to a Jewish tradition that gives them identity, whether they seek it or not.

Joining as event moderator will be novelist Jonathan Safran Foer.
