Looking for a fun and engaging way to connect with others, hone your skills and contribute to a meaningful cause? Women of Emanu-El’s Canasta Tuesdays are back for the Winter 2025 session!
Whether you’re a seasoned player or a beginner eager to learn, this program offers something for everyone while raising funds for the JBI Library (Jewish Braille Institute), an organization that empowers individuals who are blind or visually impaired to participate fully in Jewish life.
WHY CANASTA?
Canasta Tuesdays are more than just a game—they’re a chance to meet new friends, strengthen bonds, and immerse yourself in a warm, welcoming community. As one beginner player said, “As someone who never played canasta before, I was amazed by how quickly I learned and how many wonderful connections I made.”
CANASTA TUESDAY HAS OPTIONS FOR EVERYONE
Beginner/Refresher Class: 10 am – 12 pm
Perfect for those new to canasta or looking to refresh their skills, this series of four two-hour lessons will be led by Sharon Steinberg, a Certified Instructor of the Canasta League of America (CLA). With her expert guidance, you’ll gain confidence and master the essentials of this beloved card game.
Supervised Play: 12 pm – 1 pm
After completing the lessons, participants can join Supervised Play to refine their new skills. Sharon will be on hand to offer tips and feedback, ensuring you’re ready to take on any canasta table.
Unsupervised Play: 11 am – 1 pm
Already know the game and just want to play? Enjoy Unsupervised Play with other enthusiasts. A suggested $15 donation supports community initiatives and programs.
SUPPORTING THE JEWISH BRAILLE INSTITUTE
Canasta Tuesdays are not just about fun—they’re also about giving back. Proceeds from this program help fund the JBI Library (Jewish Braille Institute). Founded in 1931, JBI provides free braille, audio, and large print resources to more than 11,000 people who are blind or visually impaired, empowering them to access Jewish culture, education, and religious life. Every hand of canasta you play helps extend these life-changing resources to those in need.
Canasta Tuesdays are open to temple members and their friends. Non-members must be sponsored by a Temple Emanu-El member. Spaces are limited, so register early to secure your spot!
Come for the cards, stay for the community and leave knowing you’ve made a difference. We look forward to seeing you at Canasta Tuesdays!
