On April 24, 2022, the Sunday Lunch Program, one of the temple’s longest-standing volunteer efforts, celebrated its 40th anniversary. The program, which has never missed a Sunday, consists of members making and distributing food to many in our community who are in need, continuing even when the pandemic has restricted in-person access.
The speakers included Miriam Reines, a member of Temple Emanu-El for 77 years, who has been with the program since its beginning and now serves as its chair. Charlie Pellett, former SLP Captain who you might recognize as the “Stand Clear of the Closing Doors” voice on the subway, also spoke. Other speakers included Peter and Mary Kalikow Senior Rabbinic Chair Joshua M. Davidson, Senior Rabbi Emeritus Dr. Ronald B. Sobel, and Sunday Lunch Program Cofounder Joanne Sobel.
