Meet Dr. Suzanne Gronemeyer of Memphis, Tennessee
By Erica Slutsky | Communications Manager
Dr. Suzanne Gronemeyer lives just over 1000 miles away from Temple Emanu-El, but thanks to our invigorated virtual programming, she has been making the most of her temple membership. Dr. Gronemeyer is the Director of the Pediatric Oncology Program at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and a Fellow with the American Association for Cancer Education (AACE). She currently serves on the Boards of the AACE, Intercultural Cancer Council, Memphis Symphony Orchestra, and the Memphis Chamber Music Society. When Dr. Gronemeyer was looking for Reform congregations before the 2020 High Holy Days, “Temple Emanu-El stood out, with its outstanding clergy, wonderful music, majestic sanctuary, and masterful presentation,” she said.
By October 2020, Dr. Gronemeyer had joined the temple as a full member. Though she participates virtually, Dr. Gronemeyer regularly attends Shabbat services, virtual Oneg, Torah study, Daily Sunset Services (as time permits), Rabbi Davidson’s Muslim-Jewish dialogue group, and two Gather groups. Last May, she started a weekly “Zoom Schmooze” with several other members. “I’ve found the Temple clergy, staff, and members to be very warm and welcoming,” she said. “It’s felt like home and family from the beginning, even though I have yet to meet anyone in person!”
She notes the connections that a strong community fosters, even in a virtual space. “I highly recommend membership to everyone so that they can participate in the many members-only activities available online. It’s a great way to make friends and feel like part of a wonderful community!”
