Our prayers are with the entire community of Congregation Beth Israel of Colleyville, Texas

January 15, 2022

Dear Congregants,

Tragically, on too many occasions in recent years, synagogue sanctuaries have become the scenes of violent confrontation, breaching the peace and security we seek when we enter them.

Once again, that security has been shattered. This evening, a hostage situation is still unfolding at Congregation Beth Israel, a Reform synagogue in Colleyville, Texas. The temple’s beloved Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker is believed to be among those seized. May they be released safely and quickly. Our prayers are with all who are experiencing a terror difficult to imagine, and with the entire community of Congregation Beth Israel.

We know that anti-Semitism is on the rise in America, and while the motives behind the assault remain speculative, early reports do suggest it was an anti-Semitic terrorist attack, and the synagogue was a deliberate target.

We want to reassure you that Temple Emanu-El remains ever-alert to our safety needs, and that we know of no unusual causes for concern. But we remain vigilant.

May the One who makes peace in the heavens, help us create peace on earth. And may all of us be able to dwell, and pray, in safety and security, with none to make us afraid.

In sorrow, prayer and solidarity,
Rabbi Joshua M. Davidson
