s part of our Tikkun Olam program of activities, Student Intern Organist of Emanu-El Evan Griffith and flutist Jamie Rucinski will perform a “Mitzvah of Music” with a brief concert for seniors from DOROT. The concert will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010, at 1 PM. Temple members are encouraged to attend the program, and volunteers are needed to greet the seniors (starting at 10:30 AM), serve them Sunday brunch, sit with them during the concert, and escort them on a tour of the choir loft and museum. Register with the Tikkun Olam Committee, if you are interested in helping. (Include the project name in your message.)

Evan and Jamie both are graduates of the Religious School and the 2008 Confirmation Class; they currently serve as board members of the Temple Emanu-El Senior Temple Youth Group. Evan regularly accompanies the Religious School and family holiday services at Emanu-El, including accompanying the cantor and professional Emanu-El choir. In 2006, Evan and Jamie formed a pipe organ and flute duo. They have been given the honor to play at certain Emanu-El services throughout the year. While Jamie and Evan have a repertoire of classical and contemporary work, their favorite type of music to perform is the Jewish liturgical music used at Temple Emanu-El.

The half-hour “Mitzvah of Music” program will consist of a variety of pieces showing off the many different styles of both older and modern Jewish music composition. At the conclusion of the concert, the audience will be invited to the choir loft where they will be able to see the pipe organ and the performers up close. There, the program will end with a communal singing of Hatikvah, the Israeli national anthem.
