Among the things that are unique about Temple Emanu-El is its continued use of the Union Prayer Book in its worship. Conceived in the late l9th century by the growing Reform Movement in America, the Union Prayer Book (ultimately revised several times) is a work that combines the essence of Jewish tradition along with a spirit of classical dignity. By evoking the feeling that prayer is truly different, use of the Union Prayer Book is an attempt to reach a mode of thinking and feeling that transcends the ordinary here and now and that seeks the realms of the sublime.

Another notable element in Temple Emanu-El’s services is the role of our cantor, organists and professional choir members, who bring to life some of the greatest music ever composed for the synagogue. Click here to view the listing of this week’s music program.

ALTERNATIVE SERVICES
Once a month, generally on the first Friday of the month, we host Shabbat Shalom! — a late Sabbath service at 6:30 P.M. (Enter at One East 65th Street.) Shabbat Shalom! is a new way to welcome the Sabbath at Emanu-El. A prayer book designed specifically for this service helps us connect with familiar melodies from our heritage, as well as new ones that create a dynamic and refreshing approach to prayer. This service is appropriate for adults and youth.

Temple Emanu-El also offers two other alternative services on a monthly basis: Tot Shabbat and Shabbat Kodesh. Developed for families with children through early school age, Tot Shabbat features a brief “singing” service with a story. After services, we gather for a traditional Sabbath dinner and an art project. Shabbat Kodesh is a participatory prayer experience, for older children (8 years and up) accompanied by their parents, in which the Hebrew prayers are made accessible through lively melodies and the structure of the service is made meaningful with thoughtful explanations. Adults who wish to learn and sing the Hebrew prayers also are invited to attend.

For those who would like a moment of prayer during the week, Congregation Emanu-El also offers a Sunset Service, held Sunday through Thursday at 5:30 P.M. in Greenwald Hall. (Enter at One East 65th Street.) This service has been led by members of our Readers Panel, under the auspices of the Men’s Club, for more than 60 years.

A NOTE ABOUT OUR SANCTUARIES
Temple Emanu-El is proud to provide an induction loop system in our Fifth Avenue sanctuaries to assist those members of our congregation as well as visitors who may be hard of hearing. Hearing aids must be switched to the “T” (telecoil) setting. Infrared assistance listening devices also are available for use in all of our sanctuaries, including Greenwald Hall and the Leon Lowenstein Auditorium. Portable receivers and headsets or neck loops are available from a lobby attendant or usher; picture ID is required.
