Dr. Andrew Henderson

Dr. Andrew Henderson was appointed assistant organist at Emanu-El in June 2011 and promoted to associate organist in June 2012. Since 2005, he has been the director of music and the organist at New York’s Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he directs an extensive liturgical program with a number of choirs, the 50-voice Saint Andrew Chorale and the highly regarded “Music on Madison” concert series. He also serves as the organ instructor at Teacher’s College, Columbia University, and is an adjunct assistant professor of organ at Westminster Choir College, where he teaches graduate courses in organ literature.

A native of Canada, he earned degrees in music from Cambridge University (England) and Yale. He earned his doctorate of musical arts from the Juilliard School in 2007, receiving the Richard F. French prize for the best doctoral document.

Dr. Anderson was a finalist in the international competition Grand Prix de Chartres in France in 2002 and won first prize in the Royal Canadian College of Organists’ biennial National Organ Playing Competition the following year. He has performed with the New York Philharmonic, American Symphony Orchestra, Musica Sacra, The Collegiate Chorale and The New Amsterdam Singers. He also has performed solo recitals at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City), Boulder Bach Festival (Colorado) and Elora Festival (Ontario, Canada), as well as in Georgia, Kansas, and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His performances have been featured on the nationally syndicated public radio programs Pipedreams and With Heart and Voice. His first solo CD, Andrew Henderson at St. John’s, Elora, was recorded in Canada in 2010. A fellow of the Royal Canadian College of Organists, his teachers have included John Tuttle, Barrie Cabena, David Sanger, Thomas Murray and John Weaver.
