Religious School Student Council

he Religious School’s Student Council has been meeting since 1965, under the leadership of faculty member Mark Willner. Each Sunday and Wednesday class in grades 4 through 7 nominates delegates, who serve a one-year term — although several delegates have served more than one term. Delegates meet approximately once a month on selected Sundays, prior to regular class sessions.

The delegates have two primary responsibilites: selecting the recipient organizations for the Religious School’s weekly tzedakah collection, based on the suggestions of their respective classes, and publishing of a newspaper, The Prophet’s Voice.

For the 2011-2012 school year, the council announced the following as the target organizations to receive tzedakah collections: Yorkville Common Pantry, City Harvest and Magen David Adom. By this May, each organization will have been the recipient of collections over a set period of time. Council members are informed about the recipients and recognize the humanitarian endeavors performed by all of them.
