HIGHLIGHTS FROM
THE 56ers LAST YEAR:

  • A slumber party at the Temple — Students spent the night celebrating Chanukah, playing games and bonding with classmates. It was amazing!
  • Fire and Ice — Students engaged in Havdalah, a Jewish ceremony that distinguishes Shabbat from the rest of the week. Then, all the students had a great time ice skating at Wollman Rink.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 78s LAST YEAR:

  • Broadway! — Several students took advantage of a New York Sunday by going to see Legally Blonde: The Musical.
  • An ice sculpting class — Students learned to sculpt a mug from a block of ice, then drank from their new mug and smashed it on the floor. (It would have melted anyway!)

ongregation Emanu-El’s Junior Youth Groups are designed to build a sense of community among Religious School students by engaging in fun, meaningful and social activities outside of Religious School hours. Participating in Junior Youth Group activities will help students make new long-lasting friendships while strengthening those that already exist. Each event is designed to create an experience in which students meet new people and bond with one another through interesting activities and games. These events also give students a chance to learn about Judaism through experiential education, bringing Judaism out of the Temple and into their everyday lives.

The Junior Youth Groups consist of two programs: one for fifth and sixth graders (56ers) and another for seventh and eighth graders (78s). Event calendars for the 2008-2009 academic year will be available by the end of the summer. When you do receive your calendar, please plan to attend as many events as possible. Junior Youth Group students who attend events tend to enjoy Religious School more because of their new shared experiences with classmates. They also develop a connection to Judaism outside of the synagogue.

Questions and comments regarding Junior Youth Group activities should be directed to our Coordinator of Youth & Young Adult Informal Learning.
