| JERUSALEM IN EARLY JEWISH PRAYER: POLITICAL, RELIGIOUS OR MYSTICAL? |
Professor Stefan ReifTuesday, November 29, 2011 • 6:30 PM WHICH IDEAS ABOUT Jerusalem did the early Rabbis inherit from earlier Jewish traditions? How did they employ those when they composed their prayers? Did various groups then adjust their wording to take account of how they saw the future Jerusalem? Using rare manuscript evidence from the Cairo Genizah, Professor Stefan Reif will trace the history of the Holy City’s place within the earliest Jewish prayer books. STEFAN REIF is emeritus professor of medieval Hebrew studies and fellow of St. John’s College in the University of Cambridge. He is the author of many books and articles and has lectured widely in Europe, Israel and the U.S. His latest volumes are A Jewish Archive From Old Cairo, Problems With Prayers and Charles Taylor and the Genizah Collection. |
