Rabbi Sarah Reines

Rabbi Sarah Reines (Interim Associate Rabbi) joyfully returns to Temple Emanu-El’s bimah three decades after marking her Confirmation at Congregation Emanu-El. During those intermediary years, she earned both a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, magna cum laude, from Brandeis University and a master’s through Brandeis’ program in Jewish Communal Service, and she was ordained as a rabbi by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, under the hands of Senior Rabbi Emeritus Dr. Ronald B. Sobel, in Emanu-El’s Fifth Avenue Sanctuary.

During her time in rabbinic school, Sarah served as a Hospital Chaplain at New York University and New York-Presbyterian hospitals, as a Family and Youth Educator at Community Synagogue in Port Washington, and as a Rabbinic Intern at Central Synagogue in New York. She was recognized by the seminary faculty for her skills in homiletics, midrash, liturgy and history. Sarah is a musician and a singer, and she has integrated these passions into her professional work, first, as a rabbi of Central Synagogue and, more recently, as a Community Rabbi, supporting affiliated and unaffiliated Jewish households in the New York City area.

Sarah has written for various online and in-print publications and has served in leadership positions for various religious and secular organizations. She currently sits on the boards of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the Women’s Rabbinic Network.

Sarah and her husband, Rich, were married 25 years ago in the Beth-El Chapel and are the proud parents of daughters Talia and Noa.
