David Posner was a high-school senior when he visted Temple Emanu-El for the first time, in 1964. Accompanied by his parents, he was there to meet a rabbi who had granted him a scholarship for college and then rabbinical school. Nine years later, at age 25, he was invited to work at the soaring Upper East Side temple, beoming perhaps the youngest rabbi ever hired there.
