William Sharlin

William SharlinWILLIAM SHARLIN (1918 – ) was born in New York City, where he was educated at local yeshivot. After graduating from Yeshiva University, he attended the Teachers Seminary and the Jerusalem Conservatory of Music from 1935 – 1939, in what was then Palestine. It was there that he received his Master of Music degree in piano and composition.

In 1949, Cantor Sharlin entered the Hebrew Union College School of Sacred Music, and in 1951 he received a Bachelor of Sacred Music degree and graduate fellowship at HUC-Cincinnati. His first position as cantor came at the Leo Baeck Temple in Los Angeles, and he was subsequently appointed chairman of the Sacred Music department of HUC-Los Angeles.

Cantor Sharlin continues to lecture on the many facets of synagogue music. His musical compositions are sung at synagogues across the country.
