Marshall Portnoy

Marshall PortnoyCANTOR MARSHALL PORTNOY is the chazan of Main Line Reform Temple in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, and immediate past vice president of the American Conference of Cantors. His two-volume series The Art of Cantillation has brought the skill and the joy of reading Torah and Haftarah to tens of thousands throughout the globe and regularly remains among the most popular volumes of the URJ Press. His musical works, published by Transcontinental Music Publications, are performed widely throughout the United States, and he is the recipient of frequent commissions. His first CD, Songs of Renewal, was released in 2006. Of it, Debbie Friedman wrote on the dustjacket, “Thoughtful and gentle, mindful and kind, this loving soul takes the listener, with every note he sings, to a place of hope and calm.” His second CD, I Still Believe, was released in 2010.

A graduate of Yale, Cantor Portnoy was invested both by the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Hebrew Union College. In December 2008, h3 was awarded the degree of Doctor of Music, honoris causa, by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Cantor Portnoy has celebrated more than 40 years in the cantorate and 20 years at Main Line Reform Temple.
