Danny Maseng

Danny MasengDON TOURLIEV “DANNY” MASENG is a noted composer of Jewish liturgical music, as well as a singer, actor and writer. Born in Tel Aviv to American parents, he was a childhood television star in Israel. He came to the United States in 1971 as one of six performers in the Broadway production of Only Fools Are Sad, produced under the patronage of Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir and featuring songs and stories of the Chasidic movement.

Mr. Maseng has composed more than 10 albums of work, including Soul on Fire, Songs for the Sabbath and, most recently, Heaven on Earth: Shabbat at Temple Israel of Hollywood, where he currently serves as chazan and music director.

Prior to his position at Temple Israel of Hollywood, located in Los Angeles, Cantor Maseng served at Congregation Agudas Achim in Livingston Manor, N.Y. , and at Temple Israel of Columbus (Ohio). He also has helped found and run the Steven Spielberg Theater Fellowships for the Foundation for Jewish Camping and served as the artistic director of the Brandeis-Bardin Institute in California. He is the founding director of the Jewish Arts Institute, a program run out of the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center in Falls Village, Conn. In 2007, he was appointed Patron Artist of the Jewish Institute of Cantorial Arts at the University of Potsdam in Germany, the first cantorial school in Germany since the Holocaust.
