Temple Emanu-El’s weekly seminar on Talmud examines the text in English translation, with informal yet spirited discussion. No background in Talmud or Hebrew is required. This seminar is taught by Rabbi Philip Hiat, scholar-in-residence at Central Synagogue, as he has done for more than 20 years.

This year’s selected text is part of the third chapter of tractate Bava Metzia, which examines laws related to hiring, losses on deposits, the quantity and quality of articles, and the use of money on such deposits. According to Rabbi Hiat, “If you understand this chapter of Talmud, you can understand the entire Talmud.”

There is no charge for this class. All are welcome to join at any time during the year—both newcomers to Judaic studies and those who have long been studying. Classes meet from 6:15 PM to 7:15 PM on Wednesdays, from September 6 and through June 27, 2018. Enter at the Marvin and Elisabeth Cassell Community House. Attend when you can and when you wish.
