Temple Emanu-El is pleased to “welcome home” Rabbi Howard A. Berman as our scholar in residence for the first Shabbat in February, when he will speak about “Liturgical Evolution and the Union Prayer Book.” After services, over dinner on Friday and lunch on Saturday, temple members are invited to join in a conversation about our own liturgical journey and share with each other what we value in a prayer book. There is no charge for either meal, but reservations are requested.

Rabbi Berman is executive director of the Society for Classical Reform Judaism and co-editor of The Union Prayer Book: Sinai Edition, Revised, the contemporary-language version of the historic liturgy of American Reform Judaism, published in 2012. (Temple Emanu-El has been using an offprint of this at services since June 2015.) Rabbi Berman earned his undergraduate degree in European history from the University of London, England, and studied for the rabbinate at the Leo Baeck College in London, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. He was ordained in 1974 and served for five years as Temple Emanu-El’s assistant rabbi. Rabbi Berman also has pursued graduate studies in American religious history at the University of Chicago Divinity School and the Chicago Theological Seminary. In 1999 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
