abbi Leon Morris will lead our discussion of
The Septembers of Shiraz
, the literary debut of Iranian-born author Dalia Sofer. In the aftermath of the Iranian revolution, rare-gem dealer Isaac Amin (who comes from a prosperous Jewish family) is arrested, wrongly accused of being a spy. Terrified by his disappearance, his family must reconcile a new world of cruelty and chaos with the collapse of everything they have known.

A page-turning tale, The Septembers of Shiraz simmers with questions of identity, alienation and love, not simply for a spouse or a child but for all the intangible sights and smells of the place we call home.

DALIA SOFER was born in Iran and fled at the age of 10 to the United States with her family. She is the recipient of a Whiting Writers’ Award and has been a resident at Yaddo. A graduate of the MFA program at Sarah Lawrence College, she lives in New York City.

Open to members of the Women’s Auxiliary, our discussion will be held in the sixth-floor lounge of the Marvin and Elisabeth Cassell Community House (One East 65th Street). Feel free to bring your lunch. Coffee and cookies will be served. RSVP to (212) 744-1400, ext. 235 or send a message.
