In the case of a slave who wishes to remain within his master’s home, “his master shall take him before God.” Twice, actually, in our parashah we read about a person coming before ha-Elohim.

The God Within Us
This commentary was really an inspiration and, coming on the heels of Brian
Williams' downfall, a cautionary tale. Yes, we all have the potential to
act in a holy manner. The problem comes when we think, not of the other
person (the slave, in this case) but of ourselves. Your comments could not
have come at a better time, Rabbi Zeidman!
