Parashat Tol'dot (November 26, 2011)

TOL’DOT CHRONICLES Abraham’s family into the next generation. It begins, as most family narratives do, with a marriage — between our patriarch Isaac and matriarch Rebekah. But the foundation of our historical narrative comes a few verses later with the in utero struggle between Jacob and Esau.

Parashat Tol'dot
This parshat makes me think that men should pay close heed to their wives'
instincts! It does seem rather mystical how women in the Torah have
anticipated destiny. On the other hand, what if Esau had not given up his
birthright so quickly? What would have been our heritage?  I enjoy a good
mess of pottage as much as the next person, but sometimes the immediate
desire for material satisfaction--quickly consumed and then forever
gone--means you must forfeit something of lasting value. Let us consider
our daily options with gravity and insight.
