TORAH CROWNS
New York, 1891

These crowns were presented to Temple Beth-El, which merged with Emanu-El in 1927. The donor, Lyman G. Bloomingdale, was a prominent New Yorker and art collector, who served at one time as treasurer of Temple Beth-El and also as treasurer of the Montefiore Hospital. Born in 1841 in New York, he began working with his father as a traveling merchant in the western states. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Kansas Volunteers. After the war he worked with his father in the hoopskirt business; in 1872, he opened a dry goods store which developed into the present-day Bloomingdale's.
